Framer CMS Data Sync Plugin
Framer CMS plugin for Sync data from any source like Google Sheets, Airtable, Firebase, Supabase, Postgres etc to Framer CMS.
Keeping Framer CMS in Sync with Real Products
I built CMS Data Sync while working on the BuildShip Integrations website, a Framer-powered site with over 500 pages that needed to stay in sync with a fast-moving product.
Framer is exceptionally good at what it sets out to do. It makes layout, interaction, and visual polish feel almost effortless. But as the site grew and the product evolved, a quiet tension started to show up: the CMS was becoming a bottleneck.
Framer does not support API calls or automations by design. Content is expected to be edited manually. For small sites, that is perfectly reasonable. For a product-driven website, it slowly becomes brittle. Pages fall out of date. Schemas change. The website starts lagging behind the system it is supposed to represent.
I wanted Framer to stay what it does best: a UI layer. I needed the data to come from somewhere else.
You can find the plugin on the Framer Marketplace.
Finding the Right Extension Point
Plugins turned out to be the only place where this was possible. They are the one part of Framer that can reach outside, fetch data, and write back into the CMS.
Framer already has plugins for specific tools like Google Sheets or Airtable. They work well for narrow use cases, but they lock you into a single source. What I needed was something more flexible: something that could connect to anything, as long as it could return structured data.
That is where BuildShip fit naturally.
What CMS Data Sync Enables
CMS Data Sync connects Framer CMS to BuildShip workflows and treats external systems as the source of truth:
- Connect: Hook up any BuildShip workflow endpoint that outputs structured JSON.
- Preview: Inspect incoming records and verify schemas in real time.
- Map Fields: Intuitively map external JSON keys to Framer CMS fields and collection types.
- Stable Identifiers: Select an identifier field so repeated syncs update existing items instead of creating duplicates.
The CMS stops being something you constantly edit and starts behaving more like a projection of your product state.
A Tool People Actually Use
Today, CMS Data Sync has more than 1,300 active users. Many of them are using Framer beyond simple marketing pages—building documentation, integration directories, and product surfaces that change frequently.
The plugin is intentionally designed for developers, but without feeling hostile to designers. The UI explains what is happening, surfaces good defaults, and avoids destructive actions. Automation should feel calm, not risky.
Why This Approach Matters
Rather than adding yet another point integration, CMS Data Sync takes a more general approach. By sitting on top of BuildShip, it can connect to databases, internal services, third-party APIs, or computed workflows without changing how Framer is used.
For teams that want Framer’s speed and polish without giving up control over their data pipelines, this ends up being a surprisingly effective balance.
You can install the plugin from the Framer Marketplace, and there is a detailed setup guide available in the BuildShip documentation.
